The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of caffeine and diazepam on middle school air rifle shooters¡¯ shooting performance. Twenty three middle school air rifle shooters(12 boys and 11 girls) were employed as the subjects for this study. They were randomly divided into three groups, and each group, in accordance with the rotation design, systematically took part in all the three different experimental conditions: caffeine of 250§·, diazepam of 2§· , and placebo. Each subject was asked to take one of the substances one hour before shooting test. The interval between tests was ten days. Every subject was asked to fire the regular 40 rounds including some practice shots within 90 minutes from 10:00 to 11:30 in the morning. Both two way-ANOVA and paired t-test were used for the data analyses, and an ¥á= .05 probability level was used for all tests of statistical significance. The results of this study were as follows: (1) Caffeine significantly improved only boys¡¯ shooting performance by 2.75 points(p<.05). (2) Diazepam did not significantly affect any shooting performance of the boy or girl shooters. (3) No significant difference was found between caffeine and diazepam conditions. (4) Two of 23 shooters taking caffeine had slight fevers and one taking diazepam showed a little nausea.
